Configuring The XML Target

  1. From the Workbench, click Configure Steps. The Configure Steps dialog box appears.
  2. Select an XML target connection.
  3. Browse to XML Objects in the Data Object tree to select an XML data object and click OK. The Configure Target XML Component dialog box appears.

In this dialog box, the XML Component creates a table definition based on the root node of the source document and creates a field collection that derives from the schema.

  4. Select one of the objects for the DTS, and then map the fields accordingly.

The XML Component primarily supports Insert on the target side. However, depending on the target settings, the Component may perform an Update to the document.

Take, for example, a job that reads a transaction file of customer information and creates an XML document containing a list of customers with their most current address. You need to sort the input by customer and transaction date/time, and the target settings need to indicate that customers repeat. As long as the customer is the same, each address updates the existing address with new information. However, if the customers are out of order, this type of processing doesn't occur.
