Managing User Variables

There are three types of user variables:

Prompted — Pass user input values into a source query or formula either from within the Workbench or from command line arguments.
Calculated — Pass the results of a formula into a source query or to other formulas.
Target — Enable you to reference a target field/value from within a formula.

Note:

To use a connection in a variable, that connection must be used in some role in the current DTS. Usage codes in the Connection Manager indicate the roles connections have in the current DTS, such as source, target, or rejected row.

If you want to use a connection in a variable but that connection does not have a role in the current DTS, add the connection to the DTS as a target in the Configure Steps window. You do not need to define any steps for this connection.

To Edit Or Delete An Existing Variable

Do one of the following in the Workbench to open the Variables dialog box:
- From the menu, click View > User Variables.
- From the Configure Source dialog box, click Variables.
  Note: Target variables are not available when you open the Variables dialog box from the Configure Source dialog box.
- From the Target pane:
  1. Right-click a linked field and select Edit Lookup Criteria. The Edit Lookup Criteria for the selected field appears.
  2. Click Edit Lookup Formula. The Edit Formula for the selected field appears.
  3. Click Show User Variables.
- From the Edit Formula dialog box, click Show User Variables.
Highlight the variable name in the Variables dialog box and click Edit or Delete.
